Because the first classic Mustang was introduced five months before the normal start of the 1965 production year, the earliest Mustangs are now widely referred to as the 1964 ½ model. The 1964 ½ Mustang started with 22,000 orders taken on the first day. From 1964 ½ - 1966, Ford Motor Company produced and sold almost 1.3 million Mustangs.
Several changes to the Mustang occurred at the start of the normal 1965 production year. For example, the engine lineup was completely reworked. Ford added the 200 cubic-inch 3.3L inline six motor that produces 120 horsepower. The 260 cubic-inch 4.3L inline six was replaced by the new 289 cubic-inch small block V8 that produced 200 horsepower with a two-barrel carburetor. High performance variations of this engine were available that boosted performance up to 271 horsepower!
The 1966 Mustang debuted with moderate exterior and interior changes. These changes included a new grille, side ornamentation, wheel covers and a gas cap. Ford’s new C-4 “cruise-o-matic” three speed automatic transmission also became standard for V8 equipped cars.
